We Were Promised Jetpacks

As part of a series, this blog delves into the songs and bands that have shaped my love for music. By sharing these stories, I hope to entertain and introduce you to new music or reintroduce you to music you previously enjoyed.

Canadian Prairie winters can be cold and dark; at times all I crave is a blanket and good (bad for me) food.

My trusty winter friend is my Concept2 Rower, 45 minutes a day 4 times a week and things always look a little brighter.

Mid-November is when my outdoor activities transition into my indoor activities, and my trusty rower. The rower loses some of its appeal by the time Christmas wrapping has been cleared away and the new year has arrived.

To keep me interested in my rowing routine, I rely on thee or four go-to Spotify playlists to keep me energized and interested. A number of years back, as those playlists began to become tiresome I needed something to jump-start my new year of exercise.

Enter We Were Promised Jetpacks

I was doing Photoshop work and listening to a Daily Mix Spotify had curated for me. Nothing exceptional was tweaking my ears until the opening guitar of Quiet Little Voices. Quiet Little Voices became the inspiration for my new rowing playlist. That song was my introduction to We Were Promised Jetpacks and over the years my love for this band has grown.

So why is We Were Promised Jetpacks such an amazing band?

Clever, mighty, and musical

We Were Promised Jetpacks is a Scottish indie rock. They have a distinctive and unique sound that sets them apart from other indie rock bands. Their music is a blend of driving guitars, propulsive drums, and anthemic choruses, all anchored by lead singer Adam Thompson's powerful and emotive vocals. They also have a knack for crafting infectious melodies that get stuck in your head – like Quiet Little Voices.

Their lyrics are thoughtful and thought-provoking, exploring themes of self-doubt, identity, and the search for meaning in life. They fearlessly delve into weighty subjects, employing a poetic and introspective style.

Their music and playing are powerful and thoughtful with unique tempo changes in many of their songs.

No one hit wonders here

We Were Promised Jetpacks was established in 2003, and their continued success and consistency over the years are a testament to their true talent and not just a fleeting trend. They continue to great songs, both musically and lyrically.

We Were Promised Jetpacks’ unique sound, thoughtful lyrics, and dedication to their craft make them deserving of a listen, you won’t regret it.
